Short answer

Prochlorperazine can reduce motion-related nausea and vomiting, but it may cause drowsiness and is not suitable for everyone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the medicine does

Motion sickness happens when signals from the eyes and balance organs do not match during travel. Prochlorperazine acts on chemical signals involved in nausea and can lessen symptoms, but it does not remove the cause of the motion. It may be supplied as a tablet, buccal tablet, or another form depending on local prescribing advice.

Possible effects include sleepiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, or dizziness. Some people can develop muscle stiffness, unusual movements, or marked restlessness. Tell a clinician about pregnancy, glaucoma, prostate or urinary problems, seizures, heart rhythm problems, or medicines that make you sleepy before using it.

Using it for a journey

Use only the dose and timing advised by a pharmacist or prescriber, and read the product instructions. Do not drive, cycle, swim alone, or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Avoid alcohol and check before combining it with sleeping medicines or other sedating treatments. Sit where movement is limited, look at the horizon, keep cool air flowing, and take small sips of fluid. A Travel Health Consultation can help plan medicines for a longer trip.

When to seek medical help

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, collapse, severe confusion, a seizure, or new uncontrollable movements. Get medical advice if vomiting continues, you cannot keep fluids down, vomit contains blood, or symptoms are not behaving like your usual motion sickness. Persistent nausea may have another cause and deserves assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which form and timing suit your journey, what medicines to avoid, whether it is appropriate for children or pregnancy, and what to do if Vomiting continues.
