Short answer

A TENS unit sends mild electrical pulses through skin electrodes to provide temporary support for some types of pain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

A TENS unit sends mild electrical pulses through skin electrodes to provide temporary support for some types of pain. It does not repair an injury or identify the cause of pain, so it works best as one part of an agreed treatment plan.

How TENS works

The device connects to adhesive pads placed on intact skin near the painful area. You may feel tingling or tapping as the settings are adjusted. The sensation should be tolerable, not sharp or burning. Response differs between people and pain conditions; relief may fade after the device is switched off.

A clinician or physiotherapist can help choose pad positions, intensity and session length. Avoid placing pads over broken or irritated skin, the front of the neck, the head or across the chest. Get specific advice before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation or a condition affecting skin healing.

Using a unit carefully

Start with clean, dry skin and inspect each pad before applying it. Turn the unit off before moving electrodes, then increase the intensity gradually until the sensation is comfortable. Remove pads if the skin becomes painful, blistered or persistently red, and follow the device instructions for storage and charging.

Keep track of what changes during and after a session. Pair pain support with the exercise, pacing, sleep or rehabilitation advice that addresses function. Do not use TENS while driving, bathing, swimming or sleeping unless a qualified professional has specifically instructed you otherwise.

When to seek care

Stop using the unit and seek advice for a burn, blister, marked rash, worsening pain or unusual muscle spasm. Seek emergency help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or a new neurological symptom. Pain that is new, severe or progressively worsening also deserves assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether TENS fits your diagnosis, where the electrodes should go, which settings are suitable and how its effect will be judged. Mention pregnancy, implanted devices, reduced sensation, epilepsy or skin problems so the clinician can advise whether it is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can TENS replace physiotherapy?

Usually it is considered an adjunct, while rehabilitation addresses movement, strength and the underlying functional problem.
