Preventing Seborrheic Keratosis: What You Should Know

Seborrheic keratoses are usually harmless, often waxy or rough growths that can look stuck onto the skin. They may appear with age or run in families, and a dependable prevention routine is not known. Their appearance is not caused by poor hygiene.

Focus on reducing friction and protecting the surrounding skin rather than trying to dissolve the growth. Choose comfortable clothing where a lesion catches, avoid scratching it, and do not apply strong acids or wart treatments unless a clinician has identified the lesion.

A new growth that changes quickly, becomes very dark, bleeds, crusts, or looks unlike your other spots deserves an examination. Seborrheic keratosis can resemble other lesions, so visual self-diagnosis is not a safe substitute for assessment.

Check your skin periodically in good light, including areas hidden by clothing, and note a lesion’s size, colour, surface, and symptoms. Photographing it can help you recognise change. Arrange a review if it repeatedly catches on jewellery, bleeds after rubbing, or causes persistent itching.

Book a dermatology assessment for a growth with rapid change, irregular colour, spontaneous bleeding, an open sore, or persistent inflammation. Seek prompt care for uncontrolled bleeding or signs of infection such as spreading redness, increasing warmth, or pus after irritation.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether a sample should be examined, and which removal method gives the clearest result for that site. Ask about wound care, pigment changes, scarring, recurrence, and what new change should bring you back.
