How to prevent intertrigo

Short answer
Prevent intertrigo by keeping skin folds clean and dry, reducing friction, and treating moisture or infection early.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main triggers
- Moisture, warmth, and repeated rubbing.
- Helpful habit
- Dry every fold after washing or sweating.
Why skin folds become irritated
Intertrigo develops where warm, moist skin rubs against itself or clothing. Common sites include the underarms, groin, under the breasts, and the abdomen. Sweat, tight fabric, limited airflow, and prolonged dampness can weaken the surface and produce a sore red rash. Yeast can grow in the affected fold, causing Skin Yeast Infection with a sharper edge or small nearby spots. An itchy groin or other Skin Rash may have causes unrelated to intertrigo, so appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.
Daily prevention
Gently wash folds, pat them fully dry, and change damp clothing promptly. Choose breathable fabrics and avoid garments that trap heat or rub. After exercise, shower or rinse when practical and dry carefully. A clean, dry cloth or suitable barrier may reduce skin-to-skin friction; do not apply fragranced products to broken skin. If sweating remains difficult to control, a clinician may consider Prescription Antiperspirant. A persistent rash may need Topical Antifungal Treatment or another targeted option.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when a fold rash is painful, cracked, oozing, foul-smelling, spreading, or not improving with careful drying. Seek prompt care for fever, marked swelling, rapidly worsening tenderness, or red streaks. Recurrent episodes may signal a continuing source of moisture, friction, or an infection that needs a different treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look like intertrigo, yeast, or another condition? Which drying or barrier method is safe for this fold? How should I prevent recurrence if sweating is a frequent trigger?
