How to prevent folliculitis after waxing

Waxing removes hair from the root and can temporarily irritate or open the follicle. Sweat, friction, occlusive products, bacteria, and hairs growing back into the skin may then produce red bumps or pustules. Folliculitis means inflammation around hair follicles; it can be infectious or caused by irritation. Ingrown hairs may look similar, so appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Follow the salon or clinician's aftercare instructions, wash gently with lukewarm water, and pat dry. Wear loose clothing and avoid intense heat, swimming, heavy exercise, and rubbing until the skin settles. Do not scratch, squeeze, shave over, or aggressively exfoliate the area immediately after waxing. Once tenderness has resolved, gentle exfoliation may help some people prone to ingrown hairs, but stop if burning or redness develops. Use clean tools and avoid sharing towels. If bumps persist, a clinician can decide whether topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for skin infection are appropriate; do not self-treat with leftover medicine.

Seek medical advice if bumps spread, become increasingly painful or warm, drain pus, form crusts, or keep returning after hair removal. Fever, red streaking, rapidly expanding redness, or feeling unwell warrants prompt assessment. A clinician should also review persistent itchy or tender bumps that do not improve after stopping friction and irritating products.
