Understanding depression during pregnancy

Short answer
Prepartum depression is depression during pregnancy, and it can cause persistent low mood, loss of interest, anxiety, sleep changes, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Timing
- It can begin during pregnancy, including before birth.
- Common effects
- Mood, interest, sleep, energy, and concentration may change.
- Support
- A pregnancy clinician can discuss therapy, support, and medicines.
How it can appear
Pregnancy can affect sleep, energy, and emotions, but depression is more than an occasional difficult day. A person may feel detached from pregnancy, irritable, hopeless, slowed down, or unable to enjoy familiar activities. Some people mainly notice worry or physical tiredness. Depression presents differently from person to person, and symptoms can overlap with insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and fatigue.
Finding support
Tell your midwife, obstetric clinician, general practitioner, or mental-health professional what you have noticed and how long it has been happening. They can assess mood, sleep, anxiety, safety, and practical pressures, then discuss talking therapy, social support, and medicines when appropriate during pregnancy. Keep appointments, accept help with routine tasks, and choose one trusted person who can check in. Do not stop an existing medicine without medical advice.
When urgent help is needed
Seek urgent help if you are thinking about harming yourself or the baby, feel unable to stay safe, or hear or see things others do not. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department if immediate danger is present. If symptoms are worsening, sleep is severely disrupted, or daily functioning is slipping, arrange prompt clinical support rather than waiting for a routine pregnancy visit.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your symptoms fit depression, anxiety, or another condition; which treatments are suitable in pregnancy; what support is available locally; and who to contact outside appointments if your safety changes.

Questions people ask
Is feeling low in pregnancy always prepartum depression?
No. A clinician considers the pattern, persistence, severity, and effect on daily life rather than one feeling alone.
Can depression during pregnancy be treated?
Yes. Treatment may include talking therapy, practical support, and carefully selected medicine when appropriate.
