Premenstrual syndrome hormones: what they mean

How the structures involved in Premenstrual Syndrome differ from normal

Short answer

Premenstrual syndrome is linked to sensitivity to normal hormone changes after ovulation, rather than simply having too much or too little of one hormone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main idea
Sensitivity to hormone shifts matters more than a single hormone level.

Daily symptoms and cycle dates reveal timing and impact.

Hormonal options require an individual safety discussion.

Hormones and symptoms

During a menstrual cycle, oestrogen and progesterone rise and fall in a changing pattern. PMS symptoms appear in the later cycle for some people as the brain and body respond to these shifts. Chemical messengers involved in mood, appetite, sleep, fluid balance, and pain may also be affected. That is why PMS can include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, food cravings, low mood, anxiety, or reduced concentration. A blood test is not usually enough to confirm PMS; the timing and repetition of symptoms are often more informative.

What you can do

Track symptoms daily alongside cycle dates for at least several cycles, noting how they affect sleep, relationships, and work. Consistent sleep, movement, regular meals, and stress-supporting routines may reduce the overall burden. A clinician can review medicines and discuss options that influence the cycle, including the Combined Pill, if it is safe for you. Do not start hormone products or supplements based only on a hormone result or an online symptom list.

When to seek an assessment

Arrange care when symptoms are severe, appear at other points in the cycle, continue after bleeding, or cause significant impairment. New pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, persistent breast changes, thyroid-like symptoms, or a major change in mood may need a different evaluation. Seek urgent help for suicidal thoughts, fainting, sudden severe pain, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.

Questions for your doctor

Does my symptom diary show a cycle-linked pattern? Could another condition be contributing? Which hormone-related treatment fits my health history and pregnancy plans?

Questions people ask

Does PMS mean my hormones are unbalanced?

PMS does not necessarily mean hormone levels are abnormal; symptoms may reflect sensitivity to ordinary cycle changes.

Can a hormone test diagnose PMS?

A single hormone test generally cannot establish the diagnosis because the timing and recurring pattern of symptoms are central.
