Pregnant Woman Water Breaks: What to Know

The membranes around the baby can release fluid as a sudden gush or as a continuing trickle. It may be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine or normal discharge by appearance alone. Fluid may be clear or lightly coloured, but a greenish, brownish, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge requires urgent attention.

If the membranes break before labour begins, the timing of pregnancy affects the assessment and care plan. Earlier membrane rupture can be associated with preterm labour, so do not wait for contractions before calling.

Put on a clean maternity pad, note when the leakage started, and observe the colour and smell. Do not use tampons, have vaginal sex, or put anything into the vagina while waiting for advice. Call the maternity unit and follow its instructions about coming in. Take your pregnancy records and medication list if you attend.

A clinician may ask about movements, contractions, pain, fever, and the fluid. Assessment can include checking your temperature, the baby's wellbeing, and whether the membranes have ruptured.

Seek urgent maternity care for reduced baby movements, heavy bleeding, fever or chills, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, or fluid that is green, brown, or foul-smelling. Call emergency services if you feel faint, very unwell, or see the umbilical cord or a part of the baby at the vagina.
