What should you know about pregnant ladies leg swelling?

As pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus and hormonal changes can affect blood return from the legs. Swelling may be more noticeable after standing, walking or sitting for a long time and may affect both ankles. Varicose veins can make heaviness or aching more noticeable.

One swollen leg, warmth, redness or tenderness can indicate a clot and should not be dismissed as ordinary pregnancy swelling. A sudden increase in swelling with headache, vision changes or upper abdominal pain can signal a pregnancy complication. Heart failure, kidney disease and obesity can also influence fluid balance, but swelling alone cannot identify its cause.

Change position regularly, take gentle walks if comfortable, and rest with your legs supported. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid tight bands around the calves. Drink normally unless your clinician has given different advice. Do not begin water tablets, compression garments or supplements without pregnancy-specific guidance.

Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden swelling, swelling of the face or hands, severe headache, visual disturbance, or pain beneath the ribs. Seek urgent care for one-sided painful swelling, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting or severe illness. These symptoms require assessment rather than home observation.

Ask whether your blood pressure, urine and leg circulation need checking, and whether support stockings are suitable. Explain whether the swelling is equal on both sides, when it began, and whether pain, redness or breathlessness is present.
