What should you know about pregnant chills no fever?

Shivering can occur when the body is trying to adjust its temperature, even before a fever appears. Hormonal changes, a cool environment, anxiety, low food intake or tiredness may contribute. Feeling chilled does not by itself diagnose an infection.

Influenza, urinary tract infection, kidney infection, pneumonia, malaria or dengue fever can cause chills, sometimes with other symptoms that develop later. Sepsis is a medical emergency and may involve feeling very unwell, fast breathing, confusion or mottled skin. The direction of concern depends on the whole pattern, not the chills alone.

Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer and note when the chills occur. Rest in a comfortable room, use light layers, eat if you can, and drink fluids. Contact your maternity clinician if chills recur or you develop urinary burning, cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea, rash, back pain or unusual weakness. Do not self-treat with antibiotics or anti-malaria medicines.

Seek urgent care for a high or rising temperature, confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, severe abdominal or back pain, a stiff neck, or feeling rapidly worse. During pregnancy, prompt assessment is also appropriate for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding or fluid loss. A normal temperature does not rule out serious illness.

Ask whether you need urine or blood testing, how often to recheck your temperature, and which fever or pain medicines are suitable. Tell the clinician about travel, insect exposure, sick contacts and any urinary or breathing symptoms.
