Pregnant again after miscarriage: what to know

Ovulation can return before the next menstrual period, so conception may happen sooner than expected. Your body may still be recovering, and bleeding or pregnancy hormone changes can make dates difficult to establish. A clinician may review your symptoms, medical history and previous pregnancy, then arrange an early scan when it can answer useful questions. Arrange a pregnancy appointment if you have a positive test, ongoing pain or bleeding, or concerns about recovery. Tell the clinician when bleeding stopped, whether symptoms changed, and any medicines or medical conditions. Take a pregnancy supplement containing folic acid if advised, avoid alcohol and smoking, and follow personalised advice about medicines. You do not need to wait for a period solely to seek care. Seek urgent medical help for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment in pregnancy, including assessment for ectopic pregnancy or infection.
