Symptoms of your water breaking

Some people notice pressure, a popping sensation or wetness without pain. Others have fluid leak when they stand, walk or change position. Contractions may begin before or after the leak, but their absence does not rule out ruptured membranes.

The fluid is usually thin and watery, while urine has a familiar urine smell and discharge is often thicker. These clues are not reliable enough to confirm the source. Waters breaking before labour and before full term can be associated with Preterm Labour and requires maternity advice.

Put on a clean pad and record when the wetness started, its colour and smell, and whether it keeps happening. Contact your maternity unit or obstetric clinician promptly. Avoid tampons, vaginal intercourse and inserting anything into the vagina until you have received individual advice. Keep track of your baby’s usual movements.

Get urgent assessment for reduced fetal movement, green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever, worsening pain, regular contractions or feeling unwell. If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, collapse or a strong urge to push, call emergency services. Do not wait for contractions to become regular before calling if fluid is leaking.

Ask what examination or swab can confirm the fluid, how to monitor movements and temperature, and whether you should come to hospital now. Clarify whom to call overnight and what changes should trigger immediate return.
