Feeling tired during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Feeling tired is common during pregnancy, but fatigue that is severe, persistent, or paired with other symptoms should be discussed with a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- Hormonal changes, poor sleep, nausea, and increased physical demands.
- Discuss promptly
- Fatigue that is severe, worsening, or limiting daily activities.

Why pregnancy can leave you tired
Hormonal changes, disrupted sleep, nausea, emotional strain, and the physical work of pregnancy can all lower energy. Tiredness may vary across pregnancy and can become more noticeable when sleep is interrupted or daily tasks are demanding.
Fatigue can also occur with anaemia, dehydration, infection, thyroid problems, or another health condition. A clinician may ask about diet, bleeding, sleep, mood, medicines, and other symptoms, and may arrange checks such as a blood test when appropriate.
Supporting your energy
Rest when you can, keep a regular sleep routine, drink fluids regularly, and choose balanced meals with sources of iron and protein. Gentle activity can support sleep and wellbeing if your maternity team considers it suitable. Accept practical help and spread demanding tasks across the day.
Do not use stimulant products or high-dose supplements to push through exhaustion without advice. Keep a note of when tiredness is worst and whether it affects eating, work, movement, or personal care; this gives your clinician useful context.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if fatigue is worsening, limits ordinary activities, or comes with breathlessness on minimal exertion, palpitations, fainting, persistent vomiting, fever, unusual bleeding, low mood, or marked thirst and reduced urination. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, collapse, confusion, or chest pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms warrant checks for anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, or dehydration. Discuss sleep quality, food intake, supplements, and mood, and ask how to recognise a change that needs same-day advice.
