Pregnancy spotting after sex: what to know

Pregnancy increases blood flow to the cervix, so contact during sex can cause light spotting. Other explanations include infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps or changes affecting the womb. A symptom does not identify one diagnosis on its own: a clinician may ask about pain, timing, colour, amount, pregnancy stage and any discharge. Contact your maternity team or obstetric clinician and describe when the spotting began, whether it followed penetration, and whether it stopped. Use a pad to observe the amount rather than relying on guesswork, and avoid putting anything into the vagina until you have received advice if bleeding continues. Seek urgent maternity help for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or reduced baby movements later in pregnancy. Emergency assessment is also needed if you feel very unwell, even when the bleeding looks light. These warning signs can point to complications that cannot be assessed safely at home.

Ask whether you need an examination, infection testing or an ultrasound, whether sex should be avoided for now, and which changes require emergency care. If an abnormal cervical or womb finding is suspected, ask what it means during pregnancy and which investigations can safely wait until after birth.
