Pregnancy Puffy Eyes: What to Know

Hormonal changes can alter how your body handles salt and fluid, making the thin skin beneath the eyes look fuller, especially after sleep or by the end of the day. Crying, rubbing the eyes, seasonal allergies, and a blocked nose can add temporary swelling. Shadows from tear-trough hollows or loose upper-eyelid skin may also make ordinary puffiness look more pronounced; these are different from swelling that starts abruptly.

Puffiness on both sides without pain or vision change is often less concerning. One-sided swelling, marked redness, tenderness, discharge, or a new rash may point to irritation or infection rather than pregnancy-related fluid changes.

Rest with your head slightly raised, use a cool—not icy—clean compress for a short period, and avoid rubbing or pressing the eyelids. If congestion or allergy symptoms are contributing, ask your maternity clinician which saline or allergy measures are suitable for you. Drink normally, follow any personal advice about salt, and choose a simple fragrance-free moisturiser around—not in—the eyes.

Do not start eye medicines, oral decongestants, injectables, or cosmetic procedures without checking pregnancy suitability. After pregnancy, persistent structural concerns can be discussed alongside options such as Under-Eye Filler or Eyelid Surgery.

Contact your maternity team promptly if facial or eyelid swelling appears suddenly or is accompanied by a severe headache, visual disturbance, upper-abdominal pain, breathlessness, or swelling elsewhere. These warning signs should not be explained away as ordinary pregnancy puffiness.
