Pregnancy and fatigue in the second trimester

Short answer
Fatigue in the second trimester can reflect the physical demands of pregnancy, but marked or worsening tiredness should be discussed to check for treatable causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding second-trimester fatigue
Your body is supporting changes in blood volume, the placenta, and the growing baby. Sleep disruption, emotional strain, nausea, pain, and the effort of daily activity can all lower energy. Some people feel better after the first trimester; others remain tired or become tired again.
Anaemia can cause low energy, breathlessness, dizziness, headaches, or paleness and can be checked with blood tests. Infection, dehydration, thyroid problems, or an underlying condition may also contribute. Fatigue itself does not identify one diagnosis.
Protecting your energy
Prioritise sleep, take regular breaks, and divide demanding tasks into smaller parts. Gentle movement, if your maternity clinician has no concerns, may support sleep and stamina. Eat regular nourishing meals and drink fluids; ask for help with work or household tasks when needed.
Keep track of how fatigue affects walking, work, concentration, and everyday care. Arrange a pregnancy review if rest and routine changes do not help. Tell the clinician about bleeding, dietary restrictions, recent illness, or symptoms that could fit [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/) or [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/).
When to seek medical care
Seek prompt maternity advice for sudden or severe fatigue, fainting, chest pain, breathlessness at rest, a racing heartbeat, persistent vomiting, fever, confusion, or reduced ability to drink. Contact your clinician if tiredness is steadily worsening or comes with bleeding, pain, or new swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need blood tests for anaemia or another cause, how to adjust activity safely, and which foods or supplements may help. Mention sleep quality, mood, snoring, recent infection, and any long-term condition such as [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/).

Questions people ask
Is fatigue normal in the second trimester?
Some tiredness can occur, but the intensity and pattern matter. New, severe, or worsening fatigue should be discussed so treatable causes are not missed.
Should I take an iron supplement for pregnancy fatigue?
Do not self-prescribe iron. A clinician can assess symptoms and blood results and recommend the appropriate supplement if needed.
