What should you know about preeclampsia after delivery symptoms?

Postpartum pre-eclampsia can appear after the baby is born, including during the time when you are adjusting to sleep loss and physical recovery. Warning symptoms include a persistent or severe headache, spots or blurred vision, pain in the upper abdomen, sudden swelling of the face or hands, nausea, or shortness of breath. Feeling generally unwell matters too. These signs do not prove the cause, but their timing after delivery makes prompt assessment sensible.

Write down when each symptom began, whether it is getting worse, and any blood-pressure reading you have. Contact your maternity unit, doctor, or urgent care service for advice. Take prescribed medicines on schedule and bring them or their names to an assessment. The clinician may check your blood pressure, urine, blood tests, reflexes, and breathing, depending on your symptoms.

Call emergency services for a seizure, confusion, fainting, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or a severe headache with vision loss. Arrange urgent same-day review for a persistent headache, visual disturbance, marked swelling, vomiting, or pain beneath the ribs. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused, or unable to see clearly.

Ask whether your symptoms require blood-pressure monitoring at home, how to take readings correctly, and which changes should trigger immediate help. Confirm how long medicines may be needed, whether they are compatible with breastfeeding, and when follow-up testing is due.
