Predisposing factors of dengue fever

Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, not by ordinary contact with a person who has dengue. Risk is higher in places where dengue circulates and where standing water gives mosquitoes a place to breed. Open containers, plant saucers, blocked drains, discarded items, and uncovered water storage can all support breeding. Travel or residence in an affected area, time outdoors, and inadequate protection from bites increase exposure.

Use an appropriate mosquito repellent, wear clothing that covers the skin, and use screens or air conditioning where available. Empty, scrub, or cover containers that hold water around the home, and keep water storage sealed. Mosquitoes can bite during daylight, so protection is useful beyond the evening. If someone at home has dengue, reduce their further mosquito exposure so a mosquito is less likely to acquire the virus and spread it.

Arrange a GP Consultation for fever with headache, chills, muscle aches, or joint pain after possible mosquito exposure. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding or easy bruising, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. A fever can have several causes, so do not rely on exposure history alone for diagnosis.
