Short answer

Preconception care for men focuses on health conditions, medicines, lifestyle and fertility factors before trying for pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it involves

A clinician may review diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, infections and long-term medicines. Some medicines or workplace exposures can affect sperm or pregnancy planning, so do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Sperm production takes time, meaning recent fever, heavy alcohol use, smoking, anabolic steroids, recreational drugs or overheating may matter during a fertility review. Sexual health, vaccinations and family medical history may also be discussed.

Steps before trying

Arrange a pre-pregnancy appointment, share a complete medicine and supplement list, and mention previous fertility concerns or difficulty conceiving. Aim for regular movement, balanced meals, restorative sleep and a weight range that is healthy for you. Avoid tobacco and recreational drugs, keep alcohol low or avoid it, and use protective equipment around chemicals, radiation or high heat. Ask whether testing or a supplement such as [Folic Acid](/materials/folic-acid/) or [Vitamin D Supplement](/materials/vitamin-d-supplement/) is appropriate. [Preconception Care](/treatments/pregnancy-and-birth-care/preconception-care/) can include both partners.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice before trying if you have testicular pain or swelling, a history of testicular injury or surgery, erection or ejaculation problems, a previous fertility diagnosis, or take testosterone or anabolic steroids. Contact a clinician promptly for a possible sexually transmitted infection. If pregnancy has not occurred after a period of regular unprotected sex, both partners can be assessed; earlier review may be sensible when a known risk is present.

Questions to ask

Could any medicine, supplement or exposure affect sperm or pregnancy planning? Do I need infection screening, vaccination review or a semen test? What changes should I make before we try?

Questions people ask

Should men attend preconception care?

Yes. A visit can identify treatable health, medicine, infection and fertility factors before pregnancy.

Can testosterone affect fertility?

Testosterone treatment can reduce sperm production, so discuss it with the prescribing clinician before trying.
