What should you know about practical flow cytometry?

A laboratory team mixes a prepared cell sample with antibodies that attach to selected markers. The cells pass through a laser-based instrument one by one. Signals from the attached markers help the team identify groups of cells and compare their characteristics.

The sample may come from blood, bone marrow, lymph-node material or another fluid. Flow cytometry can help distinguish normal immune cells from abnormal populations, but it is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination, blood counts and other pathology findings. A result is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis.

Before collection, ask which sample is planned and whether you should change medicines, food or drink. Blood collection is usually brief. Tell the team about medicines, bleeding problems, fainting during blood tests and any infection at a planned collection site. Results can take time because the laboratory must process viable cells and interpret several marker patterns. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well, since the report may need correlation with other tests.

After a blood draw, seek help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, severe swelling or fainting that does not improve. After a marrow procedure, contact the team for fever, increasing redness, pus, uncontrolled bleeding or worsening pain at the site. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or sudden collapse.

Ask what sample will be tested, which clinical question the test is addressing, when the report should be available and whether another test is needed to confirm the interpretation. Ask who will explain findings and what symptoms should trigger earlier contact.
