PPROM at 15 weeks: what to know

The membranes hold the fluid around the pregnancy. When they open early, fluid can escape and bacteria may enter more easily. A hospital assessment may include questions about when the leak began, a gentle examination, temperature checks, and ultrasound. The team will consider the fluid, symptoms, bleeding, contractions, and fetal wellbeing together. No single symptom predicts the outcome, and care decisions depend on your findings and preferences.

Call your maternity unit now or attend the emergency department according to local advice. Wear a sanitary pad rather than inserting anything, note fluid colour and odour, and avoid intercourse or swimming until reviewed. Bring your medication details. The clinicians may talk through monitoring, infection prevention, and options if the pregnancy changes. Treatments used later, such as an antenatal steroid injection, may not be suitable immediately at this gestation; your specialist will explain timing.

Go straight to emergency care if you develop a temperature, shivering, pelvic or abdominal pain, bleeding, unpleasant-smelling fluid, contractions, faintness, or a marked change in how you feel. These symptoms need prompt review for infection, labour, or another complication. Seek help as well if you cannot tell whether the wetness is fluid.
