Short answer

Postpartum depression symptoms can last for weeks or longer, and their course varies; early assessment and suitable support can help recovery begin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the course can differ

Some people notice symptoms ease as support and treatment take effect, while others experience a longer or fluctuating course. Ongoing sleep disruption, isolation, pain, feeding difficulties, financial or relationship stress and previous mental health problems may make coping harder. Symptoms can include low mood, loss of pleasure, guilt, anxiety, irritability, poor concentration and difficulty feeling connected to the baby. Waiting for a particular time point is not necessary: distress that persists or affects functioning is enough reason to seek an assessment.

Support recovery

Book an appointment with a GP, midwife, obstetric clinician or mental health professional and describe when symptoms began, how they change, and how sleep and daily care are affected. Treatment may involve talking therapy, practical and family support, medication, or a combination chosen with your clinician. Accept concrete help with meals, rest and baby care. Keep follow-up appointments even if one better day makes the problem seem resolved, because symptoms may return or become more noticeable under strain.

Do not wait during a crisis

Seek emergency help for thoughts of suicide or harming the baby, inability to stay safe, hallucinations, severe confusion, extreme agitation or losing touch with reality. Place the baby somewhere safe, stay with a trusted adult if possible, and contact local emergency services or an emergency department. For worsening symptoms, inability to function or persistent distress, arrange prompt clinical care rather than setting a personal deadline for improvement.

Questions about recovery

What signs show that treatment is helping? How often should we review my symptoms? What can my support network do during a difficult period? What should I do if symptoms return after improving?

Questions people ask

Will postpartum depression go away on its own?

It may change over time, but waiting without support can prolong distress. A clinical assessment helps identify appropriate care.

When should I ask for help?

Ask as soon as symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with sleep, relationships, self-care or caring for your baby.
