What should you know about postpartum chills 5 days after birth?

A brief shiver may follow a cool room, tiredness, hormonal changes or fluid shifts after delivery. Chills that return, last, or come with feverishness can indicate infection. After birth, clinicians consider the uterus and vaginal discharge, a tear or caesarean wound, the urinary tract, kidneys, breasts and lungs. The symptom by itself does not show which condition is present.

Notice associated signs: worsening lower-abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, painful urination, back or side pain, breast redness, cough, chest pain, breathlessness or marked weakness. Tell the clinician if you have recently travelled or had mosquito exposure, because this can affect the assessment.

Take your temperature if possible and record the time of each episode. Rest, sip fluids and avoid overheating. Call your maternity unit, midwife or doctor promptly if chills recur, you feel feverish, or any new pain, wound change, urinary symptom or abnormal discharge appears.

Keep your discharge and wound instructions nearby, and mention all medicines and allergies. Do not take someone else’s antibiotics or use old prescriptions. A clinician may need to examine you and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Go to emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, inability to drink, or a cold, clammy appearance with feeling extremely ill. Serious infection, including sepsis, can worsen quickly and needs immediate care.

Ask what temperature or symptom pattern needs same-day review, whether your wound and urine should be checked, how to monitor bleeding or discharge, and who to call overnight if the chills return.
