What should you know about post viral laryngitis?

Short answer
Post viral laryngitis usually improves with voice rest, fluids, and avoiding irritation while the voice box recovers.

What post viral laryngitis means
A viral cold or throat infection can inflame the larynx, the part of the throat that contains the vocal cords. Hoarseness, a weak voice, a raspy sound, throat irritation, and a dry cough may continue after other cold symptoms settle. A sore throat can occur too. Recovery is often gradual rather than immediate; repeatedly testing the voice, shouting, or whispering can strain irritated vocal cords. Acid reflux, smoke, and dry air may add irritation. A hoarse voice is a common presentation of laryngitis, but it can have other causes when it persists or repeatedly returns.
What you can do at home
Speak gently and only when needed. Avoid shouting, singing, and whispering, because whispering can also stress the voice. Sip water regularly, use humidified air if it feels soothing, and avoid tobacco smoke and other airborne irritants. Rest, sleep, and treatment of uncomfortable cold symptoms may help you cope while the inflammation settles. Do not start antibiotics unless a clinician identifies a bacterial reason for them. If reflux symptoms accompany the hoarseness, mention them during a GP Consultation. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a simple pain reliever is suitable for you.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Arrange a GP assessment if the voice is not improving, if hoarseness keeps returning, or if you have significant pain, fever that persists, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, or a neck lump. People who smoke, use their voice heavily, or have reflux may need a closer look at ongoing hoarseness. An assessment can distinguish post-viral irritation from another laryngeal problem.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could reflux or another condition be prolonging my hoarseness? How long should I rest my voice? Which medicines are suitable with my existing conditions? Do I need an examination of my vocal cords?

Questions people ask
Can a cold cause laryngitis?
Yes. Viral respiratory infections can inflame the larynx and change the voice.
Should I whisper while recovering?
No. Quiet, limited speech is usually kinder to irritated vocal cords than whispering.
