Short answer

Post-partum depression is a condition involving persistent low mood, loss of interest, or distress after childbirth, and it can affect bonding, sleep, and daily functioning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Timing
Symptoms can arise after childbirth and may build gradually
Possible signs
Low mood, guilt, worry, irritability, fatigue, or disconnection
Urgent sign
Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby

What it can look like

Symptoms may include sadness, emptiness, guilt, irritability, hopelessness, loss of pleasure, or feeling disconnected from the baby. Some parents experience intense worry, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, or changes in appetite. Sleep can be difficult even when the baby is resting, while others sleep excessively. These experiences are not a character flaw and do not mean a parent does not love their child.

Short-lived emotional changes after birth can happen, but symptoms that persist, become stronger, or interfere with feeding, rest, relationships, or basic care should be assessed. Post-partum depression can occur after pregnancy loss or adoption-related transition as well as after a birth; the key issue is the pattern and impact of symptoms.

Steps toward support

Tell a trusted person exactly what you have noticed and ask for practical help with meals, rest, transport, or baby care. Contact a primary-care clinician, obstetric clinician, midwife, or mental-health professional and describe mood, anxiety, sleep, and thoughts of self-harm. Assessment can guide talking therapy, social support, medicine, or a combination, with feeding plans and preferences discussed.

Keep basic routines manageable rather than aiming for perfection. Accept help, drink fluids, eat when possible, and take brief daylight or movement breaks if safe. Do not stop prescribed medicine suddenly without advice.

When urgent help is needed

Get emergency help immediately for thoughts of suicide or harming the baby, a plan to act, inability to stay safe, severe confusion, or hearing or seeing things others do not. Ask another adult to stay with you and the baby while you contact local emergency services or attend the nearest emergency department. A sudden change with very little sleep, racing thoughts, or unusual behaviour also needs urgent assessment.

Questions to bring

Could this be post-partum depression, anxiety, a sleep disorder, or another medical problem? Which treatments are compatible with breastfeeding if relevant? What support is available for my household, and who should we contact outside office hours?

Questions people ask

Does post-partum depression mean I am a bad parent?

No. It is a health condition, not a measure of love or parenting ability, and support can make recovery more manageable.

Should I wait for it to pass?

Seek assessment when symptoms persist, intensify, or affect care and daily life; early support can clarify useful options.
