Post-Inflammatory Erythema: How to Get Rid of Red Marks

How the structures involved in Post-Inflammatory Erythema differ from normal

Short answer

Post-inflammatory erythema usually fades gradually; gentle skincare, daily sunscreen, and control of the original inflammation can help, while a dermatologist may consider light-based treatment for persistent redness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What post-inflammatory erythema means

Post-inflammatory erythema is a red or pink mark left after inflammation settles. It commonly follows acne spots, picking, irritation, or another inflamed skin problem. The colour comes from changes in small blood vessels near the skin surface, rather than from an active infection. It is different from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which appears brown, grey, or darker than the surrounding skin.

A flat mark that gradually becomes less noticeable is usually managed differently from a new, painful, raised, crusted, or draining lesion. Ongoing acne or repeated irritation can create fresh marks, so treating the trigger matters as much as addressing the existing redness.

What you can do

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free product, then moisturise to support the skin barrier. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and reapply when you are outdoors; ultraviolet exposure can make redness linger and can make contrast with nearby skin more noticeable. Avoid scrubs, aggressive brushing, picking, and products that sting, because irritation can prolong the colour change.

If acne is still active, arrange a treatment plan that reduces new breakouts without over-irritating your skin. Do not start several strong products at once. A dermatologist can assess your skin tone, the depth and distribution of the redness, and your current routine before discussing options such as IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment. These treatments use light to target visible redness, but suitability, expected improvement, and the need for repeat sessions vary.

When to seek medical care

Book a dermatology assessment if the mark is changing rather than fading, keeps returning, or has not improved despite a gentle routine and sun protection. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, increasing pain, swelling around the eye, fever, pus, or red streaking. Those features can indicate an active skin problem rather than a settled post-inflammatory mark.

Questions for your dermatologist

Ask whether the colour is post-inflammatory erythema or pigmentation, whether ongoing acne is contributing, and which ingredients are suitable for your skin barrier. If light treatment is being considered, ask how it will be adjusted for your skin tone, what temporary reactions to expect, and how sun exposure should be managed before and after treatment.

Questions people ask

Is post-inflammatory erythema the same as acne?

No. It is a colour change that can remain after an acne spot has healed, although active acne may continue to create new marks.

Can sunscreen help post-inflammatory erythema?

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen helps limit ultraviolet exposure that may prolong the visible colour change and makes consistent fading easier to see.

Are lasers or IPL suitable for everyone?

Not necessarily. A dermatologist should review your skin tone, the cause of the redness, your medicines, and the risk of temporary irritation before recommending light-based treatment.
