What should you know about a post-cesarean compression garment?

Short answer
A post-cesarean compression garment may support the abdomen, but it should not rub the incision or make breathing and movement difficult.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can and cannot do
After a caesarean birth, abdominal tenderness, swelling, and a healing incision can make movement uncomfortable. A correctly fitted garment may provide gentle support when standing, walking, or coughing. It does not close the wound, prevent every complication, or replace assessment of pain, bleeding, or infection. The incision and surrounding skin need regular checks, especially where fabric or seams touch them.
Ask your maternity team before use if you have wound separation, a dressing, significant swelling, circulation problems, breathing difficulty, or another medical condition affecting the abdomen.
Using it safely
Choose a clean garment that sits comfortably above or around the wound as instructed. Put it on without pulling the incision, and check that you can breathe deeply, eat, walk, and care for your baby. Remove it for skin checks and washing as advised. Stop and seek guidance if it causes increasing pain, tingling, numbness, pressure, skin damage, or difficulty breathing. Continue the wound-care and activity instructions given after birth.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity or surgical team promptly for increasing wound pain, redness, warmth, swelling, opening, or discharge; fever; heavy vaginal bleeding; painful urination; or a severe headache with visual changes. Seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, or one-sided leg pain and swelling. A garment should never be used to mask symptoms that need examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when compression is suitable, where the garment should sit relative to the incision, how long to wear it, how to wash it, and which wound or circulation changes need same-day assessment.
Questions people ask
Can I wear compression over my caesarean incision?
Only if your maternity or surgical team says it is suitable and the garment does not rub or press on the healing wound.
Does compression help the incision heal?
It may improve comfort for some people, but it does not replace wound care or medical review of concerning symptoms.
