What does a positive tourniquet test mean in dengue?

During this bedside test, gentle pressure is applied to the arm and the skin is checked for tiny spots called petechiae. A positive finding may occur when small vessels leak under pressure. It can be seen with dengue, but it is not specific and may be influenced by other illnesses, medicines or skin and blood-vessel factors. Dengue fever presents with fever and may include headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills or easy bruising; the pattern and timing matter.

Arrange a GP consultation for an examination and advice about testing. Until reviewed, rest, drink fluids if you can, and tell the clinician about medicines, recent mosquito exposure and travel. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically advises them, because they can increase bleeding risk in some situations. Use paracetamol only as directed on its label or by a professional.

Go to urgent care for bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, marked sleepiness or inability to drink. Seek prompt review if fever is persistent or you become worse as fever settles, since warning signs can develop during recovery.
