What should you know about a positive PET scan for lung cancer?

PET imaging uses a tracer to highlight tissue with increased metabolic activity. Lung tumours can appear active, but infection, inflammation, healing, and some non-cancerous conditions can also take up tracer. The scan is interpreted with the CT images, symptoms, previous scans, and clinical history.

A PET scan can help identify lymph nodes or distant areas that need attention and can contribute to staging. It is not a tissue diagnosis. A hoarse voice or other symptom may have many explanations; it should be assessed without assuming that the scan explains it.

Ask your respiratory or oncology team what area was positive and whether a biopsy is needed. Tissue examination can confirm the diagnosis and may allow genomic tumour profiling, which can guide targeted medicines or immunotherapy. Your team may also recommend brain imaging or other staging tests depending on the scan and symptoms.

Treatment depends on the confirmed type and stage. Possibilities include surgery such as a lung lobectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted treatment, or combinations. Palliative care can support breathing, pain, energy, sleep, and emotional needs alongside cancer-directed care.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up significant blood, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness, seizure, or a severe new headache. During treatment, report fever, chills, worsening cough, or difficulty drinking promptly because infection and treatment reactions may need quick assessment.
