What should you know about pos tb test?

Short answer

A positive TB test suggests tuberculosis infection and needs follow-up to determine whether disease is active.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding a positive result

A screening test may detect an immune response to tuberculosis bacteria. It cannot, on its own, show where infection is located, whether it is active, or whether you can spread it. A clinician will consider your symptoms, medical history, previous vaccination or test results, and exposure risk. Further assessment may include a chest examination, a chest X-ray and tests on sputum when active disease is suspected.

What to do next

Contact the service that arranged the test and attend the recommended follow-up promptly. Tell them about cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss, chest pain, coughing blood, pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines. Do not assume a positive result means you need antibiotics immediately; treatment depends on whether infection is inactive or active and on your individual health. Follow any infection-control advice while assessment is underway.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for coughing blood, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or fainting. Arrange prompt assessment for a persistent cough, fever, drenching night sweats or unexplained weight loss, particularly after known exposure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which test was positive, whether you need a chest X-ray or sputum test, whether you could pass TB to others, and how follow-up will be organised. Ask about treatment length, side effects and interactions with your current medicines.

Questions people ask

Does a positive TB test prove I have active TB?

No. Additional assessment is needed to distinguish inactive infection from active tuberculosis.

Should I ignore a positive result if I feel well?

No. Inactive infection can have no symptoms, so attend the recommended follow-up.
