What should you know about portal hypertension symptoms?

Symptoms reflect the underlying liver or vein problem as well as the pressure itself. Tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, or yellowing of the skin may point to liver disease but are not specific to portal hypertension. Confusion, unusual sleepiness, or personality change can signal impaired liver function and requires prompt review.

Contact a clinician about new abdominal swelling, leg swelling, worsening appetite, or increasing bruising, especially if liver disease is known. Note when symptoms began and whether weight, waist size, bowel motions, or alertness have changed. Take prescribed medicines as directed and avoid self-treating with supplements.

Call emergency services for vomiting blood, black stools, collapse, severe dizziness, sudden confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Bleeding from enlarged veins can become life-threatening quickly. Severe abdominal pain, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling also warrants urgent assessment.
