Spirometry can help assess airflow limitation and compare lung function over time. The result depends on effort, technique, age, body size, and current symptoms. A single result does not by itself establish asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or another diagnosis.

Use the mouthpiece as instructed, seal your lips around it, and follow the demonstrator's timing and effort cues. Avoid eating a heavy meal or exercising immediately beforehand if your clinician has advised this. Bring the printed report to your appointment and mention inhalers, recent illness, smoking, and any difficulty completing the manoeuvre.

Stop the test and seek urgent help if blowing triggers severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or marked wheezing that does not settle. Arrange medical review for persistent cough, worsening exercise tolerance, frequent wheeze, or breathlessness at rest, even if a home printout appears reassuring.

Ask which values were measured, whether your effort was adequate, and how the result fits with your symptoms and examination. Ask whether repeat spirometry, bronchodilator testing, or another investigation is appropriate.
