Short answer

A portable dry spirometer measures how much air you breathe out and how quickly you can exhale during spirometry.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is a portable dry spirometer?

A portable dry spirometer measures how much air you breathe out and how quickly you can exhale during spirometry. It has no water-filled chamber; a sensor records airflow through a mouthpiece. The test can be performed in a clinic or another suitable setting, but reliable results depend on a good seal, clear instructions and a strong, sustained effort.

Understanding the reading

The device records measures such as the amount exhaled and the speed of the first part of the breath. Clinicians compare the pattern with expected values and may repeat the test after an inhaled medicine. Results can support assessment of asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease and other breathing problems, but spirometry alone does not explain every cough or episode of breathlessness.

How to prepare and perform it

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid a heavy meal or strenuous activity shortly before testing if your clinic advises this. Ask which inhalers or medicines to use on the day. Sit or stand as instructed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, inhale fully and blow out hard and continuously until told to stop. Several attempts are normal because the team checks consistency.

When symptoms need urgent attention

Do not wait for a spirometry appointment if you have severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, inability to speak in full sentences, fainting, confusion or intense chest pain. Use your prescribed reliever plan if applicable and seek emergency help. A home reading that looks unusual should prompt clinical advice, not self-diagnosis or unsupervised medicine changes.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a formal Spirometry appointment, which medicines to pause or continue, and what the recorded measures mean. Ask whether the test should be repeated, whether bronchodilator testing is needed, and how the result fits with your symptoms and examination.

Questions people ask

Is a dry spirometer different from spirometry?

The dry spirometer is the device; spirometry is the breathing test and the process of interpreting its measurements.

Why are several blows needed?

Repeated manoeuvres help the team check that the result is technically reliable and reflects your best effort.
