What does polio do to the body?

Poliovirus often stays outside the nervous system and causes no symptoms or a short illness with fever, sore throat, nausea, or stomach upset. In some infections it reaches the brain or spinal cord. The resulting inflammation can interrupt signals from nerves to muscles, producing weakness that may affect an arm, a leg, or breathing muscles.

Weakness can appear quickly and may be uneven from one side of the body to the other. Some people later experience muscle pain, fatigue, or reduced function after an earlier infection. Vaccination prevents the infection that can lead to these effects.

Check vaccination status with a healthcare professional, particularly for children and people travelling to an area with poliovirus transmission. If someone has a possible infection, avoid preparing food for others until medical advice is obtained, wash hands carefully, and follow any public-health instructions.

Do not try to exercise through sudden weakness. Record when symptoms began and which movements changed, because this helps urgent assessment.

Call emergency services for new or worsening weakness, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, choking, or loss of movement. Urgent assessment is also needed for severe headache with neck stiffness or reduced alertness. Early evaluation matters because breathing and swallowing muscles can be affected.
