What should you know about polio side effects?

Short answer

Most reactions after polio vaccination are mild and short-lived, but severe allergy signs require immediate medical attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common local effect
Soreness, redness, or swelling
Other possible effect
Mild fever or tiredness
Urgent concern
Breathing difficulty or facial swelling

Understanding a reaction

After vaccination, a child may be unsettled or develop soreness, redness, or swelling where an injection was given. A mild fever or feeling tired can also occur. If an oral polio vaccine was used, stomach symptoms may be reported, although many children have no noticeable reaction. A reaction is not the same as polio disease. The vaccine type, timing, and the child’s health history help a clinician interpret symptoms.

Comfort and monitoring

Offer fluids, allow rest, and check the child without repeatedly disturbing sleep. Keep the immunisation record and note when symptoms began, how they changed, and any medicine given. Use fever medicine only as directed for the child’s age and health; never give aspirin to a child unless a clinician specifically advises it. Contact the vaccination service if symptoms are persistent, worsening, or difficult to explain. See Childhood Immunisation for routine vaccine guidance.

Warning signs

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or face, widespread hives, collapse, or unusual limpness soon after vaccination. Seek prompt clinical advice for a seizure, persistent high fever, repeated vomiting, or weakness that affects walking or movement. A delayed symptom may have another cause, so assessment is safer than assuming it is a vaccine reaction.

What to ask

Ask which vaccine was given, which reactions are expected, and how long monitoring should continue. If there was a previous reaction, ask whether it changes future doses and what information should be recorded for the next appointment.

Questions people ask

Does fever after polio vaccination mean polio?

No. A mild fever can follow vaccination and does not by itself indicate polio disease.

What should I do after a previous vaccine reaction?

Tell the vaccinator exactly what happened and when; they can assess whether another dose is appropriate and how to observe safely.
