What should you know about point of care ultrasound ems?

A portable probe can be used in an ambulance, emergency department or other urgent setting when a rapid look may help guide the next decision. Depending on the situation, a clinician may assess fluid, the lungs, the heart, blood vessels or a painful soft-tissue area. The scan is brief and focused rather than a full diagnostic study. It supports the history, examination and vital signs; a normal-looking image does not rule out every serious problem.

You may need to lie still, change position or briefly hold your breath while gel and a probe are placed on the skin. Tell the team about allergies, medicines, pregnancy and the timing of an injury when relevant. Do not delay calling emergency services because you hope to arrange an ultrasound yourself. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, fainting, new one-sided weakness, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding or a limb that becomes cold and pale. After an injury, urgent help is needed for severe pain with deformity or inability to move the limb. A bedside scan is an assessment aid and should never delay treatment of an unstable patient.

Ask what question the scan is addressing, whether it changes immediate treatment, what other tests may follow and who will explain the findings. If you are discharged, ask which changes in pain, breathing, strength or alertness require a return to emergency care.
