What should you know about point-of-care ultrasound credentialing?

Credentialing is broader than attending a teaching session. It may involve a record of education, supervised scans, practical or image-based assessment, and review of whether the clinician can use a particular application safely. The requirements depend on the profession, workplace, body region, and intended procedure.

A credential applies to a defined skill set rather than every possible ultrasound examination. It also does not make an image immune to limitations. The clinical question, equipment, patient factors, and interpretation all affect the usefulness of a bedside scan.

You can ask the clinician what application they are credentialed to perform, whether their practice is supervised or independently reviewed, and how they handle an uncertain result. Ask whether images are saved and whether a formal report or additional imaging is needed. If ultrasound is being used to guide a procedure, ask how it improves placement and what other options exist.

Urgent assessment is needed for sudden weakness, a limb that is cold or discoloured, severe pain after a significant injury, or a new inability to bear weight when injury is suspected. New bladder or bowel control problems or numbness around the groin also require urgent care. Credentialing questions can wait until immediate safety concerns have been addressed.

Ask: Which ultrasound applications does your credential cover? How was image quality assessed? Who reviews difficult findings? What happens if the scan is inconclusive? Will another imaging test change the diagnosis or treatment?
