What should you know about point of care ultrasound certification?

Point-of-care ultrasound is an examination performed during a clinical encounter to help answer a focused question. Training may cover probe handling, image acquisition, basic anatomy, image interpretation, documentation, and recognising when a finding needs further assessment. A certificate can show completion of a course or an assessment pathway; the exact standard depends on the training organisation and the clinician’s professional setting.

Certification is different from a licence to practise. A clinician should use ultrasound only within their professional scope, training, and local rules. The scan is one part of an assessment, so symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and other tests may still guide the diagnosis. A reassuring image does not automatically explain persistent pain, swelling, weakness, or loss of function.

Ask which body area will be examined, what clinical question the scan is intended to address, and whether the clinician’s training includes that type of examination. You can also ask how the images and interpretation will be recorded, whether another test may be needed, and who will explain the result to you.

Wear clothing that allows access to the area being assessed. Tell the clinician about previous surgery, open skin, significant tenderness, or difficulty moving the joint. During the scan, describe where the discomfort occurs and whether movement changes it; dynamic assessment can sometimes compare tissues while they move. The clinician may use gel and a handheld probe on the skin.

Do not delay urgent medical assessment while waiting for an ultrasound appointment or certification-related explanation. Seek prompt care for a new limb weakness, inability to bear weight after an injury, a visibly deformed joint, rapidly increasing swelling, a hot red joint with fever, or severe pain after major trauma. Sudden loss of sensation, a cold or pale limb, or new difficulty controlling the bladder or bowel also needs urgent attention.

An ultrasound may be useful for some soft-tissue questions, but it is not the right test for every problem. A clinician may recommend another examination or imaging method when the suspected issue involves bone, deep structures, or a broader medical condition.

Ask: What question is this scan meant to answer? How does your training apply to this body region? Will the result change my treatment plan? If the scan is normal, what will we consider next? Will I receive a written interpretation, and when should I return if my symptoms continue?
