What should you know about a pocket spirometer?

You breathe in fully and blow out hard through the mouthpiece. The device may show airflow measures that reflect how quickly and how much air you exhale. A poor seal, coughing, hesitation, tiredness, or an incomplete breath can make the result unreliable.

A single reading cannot explain breathlessness or confirm a lung condition. Clinicians compare suitable readings with symptoms, examination findings, and sometimes other tests. Results may also vary with effort and the time of day.

Sit or stand as instructed, keep the mouthpiece sealed with your lips, and follow the device sequence. Clean or replace the mouthpiece as directed. Record the date, symptoms, and any medicine taken before testing, if your clinician asks you to monitor at home.

A Spirometry assessment uses standard technique and interpretation. Ask about the test if repeated home readings change or do not match how you feel.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, confusion, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not rely on a reassuring number if your breathing is getting worse.
