Pneumonia and shortness of breath

Breathlessness may appear during walking, conversation, or even rest. It can occur with cough, fever, chest discomfort, or unusual tiredness, but the symptom has many possible causes. Acute bronchitis, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia, angina, atrial fibrillation, and anaphylaxis are among conditions that can also affect breathing. The pattern, speed of onset, and associated signs help a clinician decide what needs checking.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and try calm, gentle breaths. Use an inhaler or other medicine only as prescribed for you. Arrange prompt medical assessment for new or unexplained breathlessness, especially with fever or a worsening cough. Note when it began, what triggers it, whether you can speak in full sentences, and any chest pain, wheeze, palpitations, or swelling.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, severe chest pressure, or sudden breathing difficulty after a possible allergic exposure. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely short of breath. A clinician should assess new breathlessness even when the cause is not yet known.

Ask whether your breathing pattern suggests an infection, airway problem, heart problem, or another cause. Clarify which tests may be needed, how to use prescribed inhalers, and which change in breathing should prompt immediate help.
