What should you know about pneumatic compression garments?

Short answer

Pneumatic compression garments use repeated air pressure to support fluid movement in a swollen limb, but they should be selected and adjusted with clinical guidance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How they work

A pneumatic garment has sections that inflate and release in sequence. The changing pressure can help move excess fluid away from an affected arm or leg and may complement other lymphoedema measures. It is different from a fixed compression sleeve or stocking because the pressure changes while the device runs. Fit, pressure, timing, and the body area treated all matter. A clinician should check the skin, circulation, swelling pattern, and any treatment-related changes before recommending a device. A garment is supportive care; it does not remove the underlying reason for swelling.

Using one safely

Use the garment exactly as taught, with the correct chamber order and pressure setting. Check the skin before and after a session for redness, blisters, pain, coolness, or colour change. Keep the sleeve or boot smooth so folds do not create concentrated pressure, and stop if symptoms worsen. Do not alter settings, add layers, or share equipment without advice. Lymphoedema therapy may also include movement, skin care, breathing exercises, and a fitted compression garment. Keep a brief record of swelling and comfort so the therapist can refine the plan.

When to seek care

Contact your care team if swelling suddenly increases, the garment causes lasting marks, or you develop new pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or skin damage. Seek urgent assessment for a hot, red, rapidly tender limb, fever, sudden breathlessness, or chest pain. These signs can have causes that need prompt evaluation and should not be managed by increasing compression at home. Ask who to call outside clinic hours before beginning treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Is pneumatic compression appropriate for my swelling and circulation? Which garment and pressure should I use? How long should a session last, and how often should it be repeated? What skin changes mean I should stop? Should I combine it with lymphoedema therapy or a fitted compression garment?

Questions people ask

Can a pneumatic garment replace all other lymphoedema care?

Not usually. A therapist may combine it with movement, skin care, and other compression approaches.

Why does the garment inflate in sections?

Sequential chambers are designed to apply pressure in a planned direction rather than squeezing the whole limb at once.
