Cosmetic Platelet-Rich Plasma: What to Know

A small blood sample is processed to separate a platelet-containing portion from other blood components. That preparation may then be injected into skin, used with microneedling, or applied during a clinician-led procedure. The method, concentration, and target area matter, so “PRP” does not describe one identical treatment.

Cosmetic plans may focus on skin texture, fine lines, acne-scar appearance, or hair concerns. Improvement is gradual and varies; PRP does not replace evaluation of a changing mole, rash, or unexplained hair loss.

Share your medical history, medicines, bleeding tendency, allergies, active infection, immune conditions, and history of thick scars. Ask how blood is collected, labelled, processed, and discarded, and whether the planned procedure is injection, microneedling, or another route.

After treatment, follow instructions for washing, moisturising, sun protection, and pausing irritating skincare. Bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness can occur where needles or devices were used. Avoid picking at crusts or applying products that were not recommended.

Report worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus-like drainage, or a wound that is not settling. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread hives, severe facial swelling, or vision symptoms. A firm lump, marked colour change, or persistent inflammation should be examined.

Ask which cosmetic concern PRP is intended to address, what technique will be used, and what alternatives are available. Clarify recovery, sun precautions, medication instructions, infection-control measures, and the plan if the outcome is limited. Ask whether another diagnosis should be considered before cosmetic treatment.
