What should you know about plaster of paris to fill holes?

Plaster of Paris should not be used to fill holes in an orthopedic cast unless the treating clinician specifically directs the repair. A gap may be part of a planned cast design, or it may show damage, pressure, or loss of support. Adding material can hide a skin problem and make the cast tighter or heavier.

A cast may contain an opening so a wound, surgical site, or part of the limb can be observed. Other holes form when plaster cracks, crumbles, or is cut during care. Their meaning depends on location, size, purpose, and the condition of the skin underneath. A clinician can decide whether the opening should stay, be protected, or lead to cast replacement.

Leave a planned opening alone and keep the cast dry. Do not pour powder, glue, resin, or wet plaster into it, and do not push dressing or objects through the gap. Protect the cast from impact and follow the prescribed activity limits. Photographing the change can help the clinic understand what happened, but it does not replace an examination.

Contact the casting service promptly if a new hole exposes padding, skin, or a sharp edge, or if the cast has become loose, cracked, damp, or unstable. Seek urgent assessment for worsening pain, increasing swelling, numbness, a cold or discoloured hand or foot, or reduced movement. A newly exposed area may need protection even when discomfort is mild.

Ask whether the opening was intentional, how to protect the exposed area, whether the cast still provides enough support, and what to do if the gap grows or the padding becomes wet.
