What should you know about plaster of paris casting molds?

Wet plaster layers can be molded around padded skin or over a carefully positioned limb. The clinician smooths the material to create the intended contour, leaving appropriate room for swelling and checking that pressure is not concentrated over sensitive areas. When the material sets, the resulting shell helps maintain the selected position.

A mold is not a generic object that fits every person. The correct shape depends on the injury, age, anatomy, swelling, and treatment plan. A support may be temporary, or it may be changed as healing and swelling develop.

Protect the mold from water and impact, and never cut or widen it yourself. Keep the limb in the recommended position and follow instructions for walking, lifting, or exercises. Check the skin at the edges and keep all review appointments so the fit can be reassessed.

Contact your care team promptly if the mold causes a focal sore area, increasing pressure, new tingling, numbness, or worsening pain. Seek urgent care for cold or discoloured digits, inability to move exposed fingers or toes, rapidly increasing swelling, or a broken support.
