What should you know about plant-based exosomes?

Exosomes are small vesicles released by cells that can carry proteins, lipids, and other signalling molecules. A plant-derived product may use material obtained from a particular plant source, but the phrase does not by itself identify the final ingredients, concentration, sterility, preservatives, or ability to reach living skin.

Products may be applied after procedures or included in topical routines. Skin can react to plant proteins, preservatives, or contamination, and a product used on recently treated skin may cause irritation if it is not suitable for that setting.

Ask for the product name, ingredient list, source plant, manufacturing details, storage instructions, and intended route of use. Confirm whether it is meant for intact skin or use after a procedure, and who is responsible for assessing your skin. Avoid unlabelled vials, products with unclear sterility, and applications over infection, open wounds, or an active flare.

Tell the clinician about allergies, eczema, medicines, pregnancy, and previous reactions to skincare products. Patch testing may be discussed when appropriate, although it cannot predict every reaction.

Stop the product and seek advice for persistent burning, swelling, hives, blistering, oozing, or a rapidly worsening rash. Urgent care is needed for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or eye involvement.
