Placenta previa and percreta: what to know

Placenta percreta belongs to the placenta accreta spectrum. Instead of separating normally after birth, the placenta grows deeply into the uterine wall and may reach through it or involve nearby organs, especially when it is low in the womb. Placenta previa and previous uterine surgery can be associated with this pattern, but only specialist assessment can clarify an individual case.

Ultrasound is often used to look at placental attachment and nearby structures. Some people need additional imaging or review by a team experienced in complex obstetric surgery.

Attend specialist appointments and keep your maternity team informed about pain, bleeding, contractions, and previous caesarean or uterine procedures. The team may plan birth before labour or bleeding begins, with an operating team, anaesthesia, blood support, and newborn care ready. A caesarean section is commonly part of planned management, with the exact operation tailored to the placenta and surrounding organs.

Go to urgent maternity care for any vaginal bleeding, contractions, severe abdominal pain, ruptured waters, dizziness, faintness, or reduced fetal movement. Tell emergency staff that placenta previa or suspected percreta has been diagnosed. Do not delay because bleeding can become severe and may require coordinated hospital treatment.

Ask how confident the scan findings are, whether nearby organs may be involved, where your birth will take place, who will be present, what symptoms require immediate admission, and how fertility and recovery may be affected by the planned surgery.
