Pins and needles in hand: what to know

A hand may tingle after you sleep on your arm or keep your wrist bent; the sensation often settles when pressure is removed. Repeated symptoms can come from a trapped nerve at the wrist or neck, or from peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism can affect nerve function. Anxiety or rapid breathing during a panic episode can also cause tingling. The pattern matters: note whether one or both hands are affected, which fingers feel different, and whether there is pain, weakness or reduced grip.

Change position, loosen anything tight around the wrist and gently move the fingers. Avoid leaning on the elbow or resting the wrist in a sharply bent position. Keep a record of episodes, triggers and associated symptoms. Arrange a routine appointment if the feeling keeps returning, lasts after pressure is removed, disturbs sleep or affects everyday tasks; a clinician may examine sensation, strength and reflexes and consider blood tests.

Seek emergency help if tingling starts suddenly with facial drooping, trouble speaking, new weakness, severe dizziness, confusion or difficulty walking, because these can be signs of Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack. Urgent assessment is also needed for rapidly worsening weakness, severe neck injury or loss of bladder or bowel control.
