Pins and Needles Sensation in Hands

A hand or arm that has been held in one position can briefly compress a nerve and cause tingling, numbness or a prickling feeling. Symptoms that return, spread, disturb sleep or affect grip may involve a nerve in the wrist, elbow, neck or a more widespread nerve problem. Peripheral Neuropathy can affect sensation in the hands and feet. Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Hypothyroidism are among the health problems a clinician may consider. Stress or rapid breathing during Panic Disorder can also bring on tingling, but this should not be assumed without considering other causes.

Notice when the sensation starts, how long it lasts, which fingers are involved and whether it is on one or both sides. Change position, loosen anything tight around the wrist and avoid leaning on the elbow. Protect numb skin from heat, cuts and pressure because reduced sensation can hide an injury. Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms keep returning, interfere with tasks or come with weakness, balance changes or neck pain. A clinician may examine strength and sensation and decide whether blood tests or nerve assessment would help.

Seek emergency help if the tingling begins suddenly with weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness or a sudden severe headache. These can be warning signs of Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack. Get prompt medical advice for rapidly worsening symptoms, loss of hand strength, severe neck pain after an injury, or difficulty walking. Do not drive yourself if you have possible stroke symptoms.

Ask: Could the pattern point to a wrist, elbow, neck or general nerve problem? Do I need checks for blood sugar, Vitamin B12 or thyroid function? What changes should prompt urgent care? Could any medicine, alcohol use or repetitive hand activity be contributing?
