Pins and needles in palms: what to know

Short answer
Pins and needles in the palms can follow temporary nerve pressure, but recurring or spreading symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Pressure or an awkward wrist position
- Notice
- Whether symptoms are one-sided, recurring, or spreading
- Urgent sign
- Sudden tingling with weakness, speech or facial changes
What it can mean
A hand may tingle after you lean on your wrist, bend your elbow, or sleep with an arm compressed. The feeling should ease as pressure is removed. Irritation of a nerve at the wrist, elbow, neck, or shoulder can cause repeated symptoms, sometimes with numbness, burning, or reduced grip.
Ongoing tingling in both hands can occur with Peripheral Neuropathy, including nerve changes associated with Type 2 Diabetes or Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Hypothyroidism and fast breathing during Panic Disorder or Generalised Anxiety Disorder can also produce tingling. The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than the sensation alone.
What to do now
Change position, gently move your fingers and wrist, and notice whether the sensation settles. Avoid leaning on the heel of your hand for long periods and take breaks from repeated gripping or keyboard work. Do not use heat or sharp objects to test numb skin because reduced sensation can hide an injury.
Arrange a routine clinical review if episodes keep returning, last after you change position, disturb sleep, or affect strength or coordination. A clinician may examine sensation, reflexes, circulation, and movement, then decide whether blood tests or nerve assessment could help.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help if tingling begins suddenly with weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, or a new severe headache. These can be warning signs of Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack, even if they improve.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what nerve pattern your symptoms follow, whether your medicines or health conditions could contribute, and which tests are appropriate. Record when the tingling starts, how long it lasts, whether both palms are involved, and any change in grip.

Questions people ask

Yes. Pressure on a nerve during sleep can cause temporary tingling that improves after movement and a position change.
When should recurring palm tingling be checked?
Book an assessment when it persists, returns frequently, affects grip, or occurs with numbness or balance problems.
