Pins and needles in hands during sleep

Short answer
Pins and needles in both hands during sleep often follow pressure on a nerve or an awkward wrist position, but repeated or lasting symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Pressure or a bent wrist during sleep

- Fingers involved, duration, weakness, and recurrence
- Emergency sign
- Sudden one-sided numbness with speech or face changes
What it can mean
A hand can tingle when sleeping on an arm, bending the wrist, or keeping the elbow pressed against a surface. The feeling should ease after you change position and move the hand. Night-time symptoms that return may reflect irritation at the wrist or elbow, or a nerve problem higher in the neck.
Symptoms affecting both hands can also occur with Peripheral Neuropathy, Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism. These links do not identify the cause on their own; a clinician may ask about medicines, alcohol, diet, neck pain, weakness, and sensation in your feet.
What to do tonight
Change position, gently open and close your hands, and keep your wrists in a neutral, relaxed position. Avoid leaning on your elbows or sleeping with your hands tightly curled. Note which fingers are affected, whether one or both hands are involved, how long the sensation lasts after waking, and whether weakness or clumsiness appears.
Arrange a primary-care review if episodes keep returning, disturb sleep, spread to the feet, or do not settle after repositioning. Do not start vitamin supplements or use a tight splint without advice, because the right treatment depends on the cause.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help immediately for sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side, or with facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, or a new severe headache. These can be signs of Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack, even if they improve.
Urgent assessment is also needed after a significant injury, or if the hand becomes cold, pale, severely painful, or difficult to move.
Questions for your doctor
Could the pattern fit nerve compression at my wrist, elbow, or neck? Do I need checks for blood sugar, thyroid function, or Vitamin B12 Deficiency? What changes should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask
Why do my hands tingle only at night?
Sleep position can compress a nerve for a time. Repeated episodes may need evaluation for nerve irritation or a wider health cause.
Should I wear a wrist support?
A clinician can advise whether a neutral wrist support fits your pattern; an overly tight support may worsen pressure.
